Chakrabongse Villas

Chakrabongse Villas review: garden rooms, the two-storey Pool View Suite, historic Thai House and riverside temple geography.

EDITORIAL REVIEW · 598 words · 3 min read · Editorial date 6 January 2025

Chakrabongse Villas places a garden, swimming pool and a small collection of individually designed rooms beside the Chao Phraya in historic Bangkok. Its family house began as Prince Chakrabongse’s retreat in 1908; today the hotel is associated with his granddaughter Narisa. The accommodation is unusually varied, so choosing between a garden room, a two-bedroom residence and a teak house is fundamental to the stay.

Inside this review

The Pool View Suite has a real internal distinction

The current official accommodation catalogue describes four suites and three rooms. The Pool View Suite, also called the Chinese Suite, is a two-storey residence set in the garden. Its two bedrooms have their own bathrooms, with a glass-walled living room and two outdoor terraces. The upper bedroom is reached by a spiral staircase. This is valuable detail for friends or a family who want shared living space without placing everyone in one bedroom.

Two bedrooms do not make the whole residence a single-level option. A group containing someone who needs to avoid stairs should resolve the bedroom allocation and access before choosing it. Likewise, the pool-view label describes the setting, not a private swimming pool belonging exclusively to the suite. The published accommodation page places the pool within the wider garden setting.

Garden room, river suite or historic teak house

The River View Suite is described as a Thai-style apartment overlooking the river and gardens. The Garden View Suite opens toward the tropical grounds. The Thai House Suite is a different proposition again: the hotel identifies it as an original nineteenth-century teak stilt house from Ayutthaya. Its historic fabric and raised-house character are part of the reason to choose it, rather than assumptions of modern tower-hotel uniformity.

The three Moroccan-themed rooms are a simpler alternative to the larger suites. The official description gives them king beds, modern shower bathrooms and writing desks looking toward the gardens. That offers a useful choice for a couple who wants the grounds and riverfront setting without paying for a separate residential layout. It also explains why a photograph of the large Thai house cannot represent what is included with a garden room.

The grounds are part of the reason to stay

The swimming pool and planted garden give this property a place to return between old-city outings. On the current Booking.com listing, an individual guest describes enjoying a pool-view room with a canopy bed and living-room sofas; another describes staying in an antique Thai house. The accounts are undated on the accessible listing, but reinforce the important fact that guests may be discussing very different accommodation.

A January 2026 Agoda guest also noted the former royal-villa setting and the variety within the small room collection. These are observations about character and choice, rather than evidence that every room has the same amount of space or the same view. A traveller comparing reviews should therefore separate comments about the grounds from comments about one particular suite.

A riverfront retreat with an old-city focus

The hotel sits on the old-city bank, opposite Wat Arun, with Wat Pho and the Grand Palace–Wat Phra Kaew complex forming the natural nearby sightseeing cluster. The river view is an attraction in its own right, but Wat Arun still requires a separate crossing to visit. Wat Paknam belongs to a farther Thonburi excursion and should not be described as a neighbouring temple.

The official dining description centres on Royal Thai cuisine served on a riverside terrace, with a changing set dinner. That makes it a distinct evening experience rather than an assumption of an unrestricted, all-day menu. Chakrabongse is particularly attractive for travellers who value a garden refuge and individual architecture. Those primarily seeking identical bedrooms, a large choice of hotel facilities or confirmed level access should compare the exact room plan before choosing on heritage alone.
